Whenever we enter into a new ‘Gregorian’ year as we have, there will always be ringing bells of advises from Muslim scholars not to celebrate the ‘new year’ and it can get to the extreme that you’re told not to even wish anybody a ‘happy new year’. Of course this draws some reaction from people, most people find this is far too radical and this doesn’t serve the purpose of inter-religious correlation.
It happens every year.
We can stay away from all this fuss, if we go through the facts.
The Gregorian calendar is one of 40 calendars used in the world. Its 2012 in the Ethiopian calendar, the Hindu samvat calendar is in 2076, 1441 in the Islamic calendar and so on.
The Gregorian calendar (which is derived from a pope’s name by the way) is the calendar that is used basically in all parts of the world, they say for secular purposes. It was developed in October 4th 1582 , yes on that date. It was developed as a correction to an already existing calendar ; ‘the Julian calendar’ which used the lunar cycle to determine dates like ‘Easter’. The Gregorian calendar was brought in October 4th 1582 to enact a solar cycle and guess what the next day’s date was? October 15th 1582. Like wasn’t it supposed to be 5th October 1582 today? No. We are using solar now.
That was the start of the Gregorian calendar, it didn’t start at 000, and it came to replace a lunar cycle calendar. The motivation for the adjustment was a recommendation of the First council of Nicaea to get all Christians celebrate on the same day because it had taken almost five centuries before virtually all Christians celebrated Easter on the same year. A problem that Muslims face almost every year because of the nature of the lunar cycle. They made a correctional calendar and actually achieved their motive because every year since then all Christians have been celebrating Easter on the same day.
Alhamdulillah for Islam, listen to what Allah said about this.
[Surat Yunus 5]
It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined from the moon phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know.
Allah S.W created the sun and made it’s rays a source of light for us and equally made the beams that come forth from the moon light for us and He ordained phases for the moon, where it starts small then its light increases until it completes a full moon. Then it begins to decrease until it returns to its first phase at the conclusion of the month. The Swahilis called the month ‘mwezi‘ which also means moon. Therefore mwezi=moon. Does it ring a bell?
The Gregorian calendar violates the basic principle of nature that the Qur’an has mentioned. Look how beautifully Allah ends this verse , He didn’t create this except in truth.
Again, Allah says,
يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ ۖ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَالْحَجِّ
[Sura Baqara 189]
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, “They are measurements of time for mankind and for Hajj.”
The people asked Allah’s Messenger about the
crescent moons. Thereafter, this Ayah was
revealed as a response, they were instructed to mark their acts of worship like the Iddah (the period of time divorced woman or a widow is required to wait before remarrying) the time for fasting and the time of their Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.
That’s why the Muslims as per their constitution “The Qur’an” should use the Hijri calendar, AH – After Hjira, it’s a lunar calendar which dates from the year the Prophet peace be upon him migrated from Makka to Madina to establish Islam in the 12th year of his prophet hood.
I discovered something that astonished me this year(1441A.H), imagine we’ve lived all our lives in deception. Let me ask, how old are you? Your mind jumps to I was born in April 19th 1994 and and we have just stepped into the year 2020 that makes me 4 months to 26 years. I discovered that’s a lie!
Let’s do this again. How old are you ? I was in born in 19th April 1994 , so I am…. No , what hijri date was it on 19/4/1994, it was on 18/11/1414 AH. Let remind you today’s date 7/5/1441AH ? Maths…. Congratulations you’re now 26 and a half years old.
How long have you been lying about your age?

Western civilisation for you. There’s no single part of the world that hasn’t been influenced by this civilisation. I think almost all Muslim countries use the Gregorian as the national calendars. We rest on the first day of the week Sunday, a new day begins after midnight (according to Islam a new day starts after maghrib) and it’s 2020 all over the world.
I’ll tell you why.
[Surat Al-Baqarah 120]
And never will the Jews or the Christians will not be pleased with you until you follow their religion i.e civilisation. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
No , you don’t have to go the synagogue or kneel down to idols for them to be pleased with you, you just have to follow their civilisation and that’s what we are doing. We are all safe from displeasing them.
Now look how Allah ends this verse, a warning from Allah. If you are still going to follow their desires their civilisation even after you have received the knowledge from the Qur’an, even after you have been reminded, then brace yourself to face Allah’s wrath and one’s got your back.
We ask Allah S.W to revive Islamic civilisation in our hearts and we seek His refuge from all that goes against Islamic Civilisation.
